For much of the existence of humanity, HVAC systems did not exist. People had to contend with the extreme weather conditions of summer and winter. The development of the idea for a centralized HVAC system came about in the mid-1800s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Humans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the beginning of our existence, humans have always used the environment around us to stay at a comfortable temperature. Caveman lived in caves because they figured out that the air was cooler under rocks. It also served as great protection from predators and the elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Development of the First Air Conditioner<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Egyptians invented air conditioning. They were able to figure out air movement. As a result, they hung wet reeds by the windows to cool the air in the room. When the wind blew the reeds, the moisture from the reeds cooled the room. This gave birth to the idea of water-cooled air conditioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Idea for Cooling\/Heating Water Pipe Systems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ancient Greeks are known for developing the idea of aqueducts, which allowed whole cities to access water and made it possible to create cooling\/heating water pipe systems. The Romans built vents and underfloor air ducts into their bathhouses and luxury homes as a way to move hot and cold air throughout the properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Creation of Fans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chinese have a long history in architecture and tea. They are also responsible for the invention of gunpowder and fans. They found that when air moves on the skin, it can make you feel cooler. So, they made fans as a way to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using Architecture to Stay Cool<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Middle Eastern countries have a reputation for reaching extremely hot temperatures. As a result, the people there used architecture as a means to live with the heat. They built towers that would catch cool air and circulate it. This would push out hot air. This idea continues today with air ducts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Incorporation of Cross Ventilation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Victorians used airflow to keep their homes at a comfortable temperature. These homes had high ceilings, recessed windows, and covered porches for cross ventilation. These elements are used in the design of homes today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Modern HVAC System<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the mid-1800s, Dr. John Gorrie, an inventor, had a desire to cool cities in the summer months. He developed a system that uses cooling coils to control humidity. He got a patent for the device and refined it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1904, Dr. Gorrie’s system was used to develop a refrigeration system that was used in the Missouri State Building. This is the first time this system was used in a public building. Over time, cooling and heating systems were installed in public theaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although people were pleased by the HVAC system, it was too expensive for residential properties. As a result, H.H. Schultz and J.Q. Sherman developed a window sill unit in 1932. By the 1960s, most homes had an HVAC system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
